General terms and fundamentals of instrumental analytics – focussing environmental analysis and monitoring of industrial processes 

Conception/characteristic steps of analytical process (sampling specifics for gases, liquids and solids – legal prerequisites and further regulations; technical principles and equipment etc.; sample preparation, e.g. comminution/crushing, extraction, stabilisation; selection of analytical principles and method development – including fundamentals of data processing and interpretation) 

Analytical principle/methods of chromatography (historical aspects, fundamental principles of chromatographic separation/compound distribution; specifics of thin layer, liquid and gas chromatography – including introduction to technical equipment/analytical instruments applied) 

Analytical principle/methods of spectrometry (fundamentals of atomic and molecular spectroscopy – absorption, emission and fluorescence techniques; specifics of atomic absorption and emission spectrometry, plasma and mass spectrometry, photometry and IR spectroscopy – including introduction to technical equipment/analytical instruments applied) 

(application/consolidation of acquired knowledge in experimental/laboratory and project work; possibility to attend subject-specific excursions)

Qualifikationsziele

Students successfully attending the module are familiar to fundamentals of the analytical process (from sampling and measurement to results interpretation) and gain specific knowledge of chromatographic and spectrometric analytical methods. Focus of intensive project work and laboratory experiments is on identification and determination of environmental pollutants in solid matter and liquids – with representative applications from water treatment, waste disposal and remediation. 

The acquired competences might be transferred to congeneric sections, e.g. air pollution management, analysis of fuels, biomass, food and animal feed as well as forensic and clinical chemistry. 

Students are enabled to discuss analytical tasks in laboratory, organise the analytical process and gain fundamental knowledge to conduct principal measurements self-reliantly. This particularly includes the ability of professional communication with scientists in multidisciplinary teams and instruction of laboratory staff.
